After the opening First Four matchup begins Tuesday, March 14th at 6:40 p.m. EST, the 2023 NCAA March Madness tournament will finally and officially be upon us. With no real favourites this year it’s set to be an ultra competitive tournament, featuring plenty of upsets, as usual.

The bracket contains 24 Canadians, including Naismith College Player of the Year favourite, Toronto’s own, Zach Edey. Ontario is represented by 18 of the 24 Canadian D1 ballers gracing the court this March Madness, and 14 of them come from the Greater Toronto Area.

With a handful of the northerners playing key roles for their schools, there will be plenty of names to look out for.

Canadian Players in the Tournament

Zach Edey #15, (1) Purdue +1100

At 7’4″, 290-pounds, Zach Edey has consistently dominated smaller big men around the collegiate level on the block. He has plowed through the Big 10 with the Boilermakers this year, finishing 29-5 (15-5 in conference), and winning the Big 10 tournament thanks to a 5-game win-streak to close it out.

As previously mentioned, he’s rounding the final turn with a healthy lead in the race to secure the Naismith College Player of the Year. An award he’d be adding to a collection which already boasts the Associated Press Big 10 Player of the Year, Sporting News’ National Player of the Year, and the College Game Day Player of the Year, which were all announced just last week.

Zach is projected to be selected in the 2nd round of the NBA draft, if selected at all. NBA scouts have reasonable concern for his lack of mobility and range. While Edey has remained a considerable post presence at Purdue for a couple of years now, a lacking combination of shooting, agility and speed hoists a red flag when translating his skill-set to the pros, which casts a shadow over his post-dominance.

Aside from draft talk, Edey’s Boilermakers are set to make a run for the title as the 4th favourites, and look for the Canadian big to be their primary option throughout the tournament. Edey is likely to be the only Canadian in the tournament to declare for next year’s NBA Draft and the only Canadian aside from G-League Ignites’ Leonard Miller from Scarborough, Ontario, who could see himself land in the top-20.

Marcus Carr moved to Texas for his senior season after playing at Pittsburgh, then Minnesota. Now a super senior, Marcus is looking to make a lasting impact on the bracket with the Longhorns, who enter the tournament as 7th favourites.

Carr has had success scoring the ball inside throughout his collegiate career, and Texas looks for him to captain the offence and distribute the ball while also being the primary scoring option when the shot-clock’s running low, leading the team in PPG. If Marcus is able to find comfort shooting the deep ball this March, he will cause serious problems for opposing defences.

The brother of Pacers’ guard Andrew Nembhard (who dazzled at the Jordan Rising Stars Tournament), is the heart and motor of the Creighton Blue Jays this season. He has solidified himself as one of the most promising Canadians in the NCAA. While scoring in double-figures, Nembhard leads the Jays in minutes, assists and free throw percentage.

Nembhard tops off a terrific starting 5 at Creighton, providing open looks for their well-rounded lineup. Creighton are the 17th highest favoured team to come home champions. Look for the Ryan-to-Ryan pick-and-roll to be a major constant in the tournament between Nembhard and Creighton’s scoring spearhead and center, Ryan Kalkbrenner.

Olivier-Maxence Prosper #12, (2) Marquette +2000

A third option for a deep Marquette Golden Eagles roster, Prosper has had a terrific junior year. Marquette’s +2000 to win the title is good enough for 11th, with a 28-6 record this year. Prosper can be a threat from deep, but does most of his damage inside using his body.

Emanuel Miller #2, (6) TCU +20000

32Gonzaga (3) L 81-8414051245/12 (41.7%)0/1 (0%)4/6 (66.7%)-1030

Emanuel is often considered a reliable third option in the TCU rotation. The Horned Frogs have 3 players with scoring averages in double figures, Mike Miles Jr., who averages 17.3, Damion Baugh who averages 12.6, and the Scarborough native, who’s the only Horned Frog in double-figures with a shooting percentage above 50%.

Miller uses his length and quickness to collect rebounds, a stat he is currently leading his team in with 6.6 per game, and sees extended minutes from hard defence.

Charles Bediako #14, (1) Alabama +500

16San Diego State (5)L 64-7110070015/7 (71.4%)0/0 (0%)0/0 (0%)525

Bediako plays the starting center role for the Crimson Tide, who have put themselves in the favourites discussion with Houston heading into the tournament, though they have been widely considered the 2nd favourites.

Alabama have the luxury of many options to fill the big positions, therefor Charles doesn’t have to play considerable minutes. Bama’s primary option, Brandon Miller is a beast of a power forward and takes on a vast majority of the scoring and rebounding loads, leaving Bediako and the remaining bigs to do the mop-up work.

Ryan often shares the 6-man role with fellow bench center Dereck Lively II. While he hasn’t played quite as many minutes as the ladder, he has provided more consistency on the stats sheet, and is a key ingredient to 3rd place standing in the ACC.

TJ Hurley #3, (15) Vermont +40000

A bench guard in a highly guard-heavy Catamounts rotation, TJ Hurley has struggled to find consistent minutes in Vermont. With that being said, he’s sure to see the court to relieve Sullivan, Penn, Deloney and Duncan and potentially while they push a 4-guard lineup at times, as they have been known to do.

Patrick Emilien #15, (8) Maryland +6000

32Alabama (1) L 51-731030000/0 (0%)0/0 (0%)1/3 (33.3%)-1217

Emilien is a bouncy small or power forward. Primarily monitor him on the defensive side of the ball, he uses his athleticism to cause problems for his matchup and switch fluidly to multiple positions.

While he is considered mostly a bench swing-man for Maryland, look for him to make an impact defensively and spark runs for his team.

Xaivian Lee #4, (15) Princeton +40000

Xaivian Lee is Princeton’s backup point guard heading into March Madness. He has performed decently in that role thus far considering his freshman status, though he’s struggled with his efficiency shooting. It will be interesting to see how he matches up against the defensive talent of the tournament, with likely even less room than he’s been recently becoming accustomed to.

Princeton’s starting backcourt of Matt Allocco and Ryan Langborg soak up 32.5 and 30.9 minutes respectively, while backup shooting guard Deven Austin’s supports with 15.2 minutes, Xaivian is left with just a little bit of wiggle room to state his case.

Sam Thomson #30, (15) Colgate +60000

Thomson has played a very key role for Colgate defensively this season, seeing valuable minutes at times while not seeing double digits in the score column this season. A reliable backup forward in a 3-guard style offence, there’s potential for him to see large minutes to overcompensate for matchup problems.

Despite his 15.6 minutes per game average, the Raiders have relied on him for a combined 48 minutes in his last two contests, both victories, 73-69 over Lafayette, and Navy 64-60.

Alamutu only gets 10 minutes a game but he uses those 10 to drain his matchup. He is no slouch on the defensive side, and has shown incredible shot discipline from everywhere on the court.

A clear problem for Sam has been his Shaq-like free throw shooting, something he needs to improve to get minutes as a guard under John Becker.

Lamaute plays in the second unit at Fairleigh Dickinson, and while he hasn’t scored the ball frequently throughout his stay, he has cemented himself in the lineup as a trustworthy minute-eater.

Sebastien doesn’t shoot the ball well, or often, but his defensive prowess and knack for collected boards has consistently granted him time in the rotation for the Knights.
