Sonny Gray Surprisingly Signs with the St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals signed SP Sonny Gray to a 3-year, $75 million contract to continue boosting their rotation. The 34-year-old is coming off of an elite season where Gray put up a 2.79 ERA, 2.83 FIP, and a Fangraphs WAR of 5.3 with the Minnesota Twins. Sonny Gray is now the third veteran starter that the St. Louis Cardinals signed so far this offseason. St. Louis’ rotation is as follows:
- SP Sonny Gray
- SP Miles Mikolas
- SP Kyle Gibson
- SP Lance Lynn
- SP Steven Matz
The average age in the Cardinals’ starting pitching staff is 34.6-years-old. We’ll have to see if the Cardinals’ strategy of signing experienced starters will pay off in 2024.
Jason Heyward Returns to Los Angeles
34-year-old outfielder Jason Heyward re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a 1-year, $9 million contract. Heyward had a career resurgence in 2023 with a 121 wRC+, .813 OPS, and a Fangraphs WAR of 2.2 in 124 games for the Dodgers. The veteran outfielder can still provide solid defence, as he had a 6 OAA in the outfield last season. With the Dodgers having yet another disappointing performance in the postseason in 2023, depth is key to their successes.
