San Francisco Giants sign RP Jordan Hicks to 4-Year Deal
Earlier on January 12th, Jordan Hicks agreed to a 4-year, $44 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. Hicks is expected to spend 2024 in the starting rotation with the Giants. He likely would not have had an opportunity to enter the rotation with the Blue Jays, with Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt, Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Berrios, and Alek Manoah being the projected starting 5.
Jordan Hicks definitely has the stuff to be a solid starter in MLB. His sinker averaged 100.1 MPH in 2023 and he increased his K/9 from 9.24 (2022) to 11.10 (2023). He utilized his four-seam fastball and sinker much more in two-strike counts rather than having the slider be the go-to in those situations. The real question is whether Jordan Hicks can have consistent command. His BB/9 was 4.39 in 2023 (MLB average is 3.3), which isn’t great compared to the rest of the league, but it decreased by about one whole walk from 2022.
In the end, Jordan Hicks will be missed by the Toronto Blue Jays because of his electric swing-and-miss stuff. He provided many quality innings down the stretch in 2023 and will look to impact the San Francisco Giants in that same way.
