Arizona Diamondbacks Sign OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to 3-year Extension
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced earlier Sunday that they have extended outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. through a 3-year, $42 million deal. The 30-year-old outfielder is coming off one of his most productive seasons in his career. Gurriel crushed 24 home runs (career-high), registered 82 RBIs (second-most in career), and had an fWAR (Fangraphs WAR) of 2.1 (career-high). The veteran also took massive strides defensively in 2023, tallying career-highs in Defensive Runs Saved (14) and Outs Above Average (1).
Gurriel came to the Diamondbacks via trade in the 2022 offseason. The Toronto Blue Jays sent Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and former top prospect Gabriel Moreno to Arizona in exchange for Daulton Varsho. If Gurriel Jr. can continue his high-level play in 2024 and beyond and Varsho continues sputtering, the trade may be considered one of the most substantial heists in recent memory.
