The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that they picked up RHP Chad Green’s 2-year option. Green will now be paid $21 million over the next 2 seasons of 2024 and 2025. With a lack of quality free agents in the free agency pool, it was a smart move for Toronto to secure him for the next couple seasons.

The veteran relief pitcher returned in 2023 from Tommy John surgery and played in 12 games in the latter half of the season. In those 12 appearances, Green struck out 16 batters and yielded 4 walks. His ERA was rather high at 5.24, but the small sample size makes the number rather unreliable. However, his FIP was a solid 2.67 during those 12 appearances.

Green’s always been a reliable reliever in his career, recording an ERA+ above 100 and a FIP under 4 in six of his last eight seasons (2016-2023). Green is expected to have a heavier role in 2024, especially with questions looming around RHP Jordan Hicks.

The Toronto Blue Jays have many decisions coming their way in regards to their unrestricted free agents. However, signing Chad Green and securing a quality setup man in the bullpen was an ideal move. As many Blue Jays fans know from his Yankee days, a healthy Chad Green is a valuable piece to have.
